Ivan Shmeliev (1873, Moscow – 1950, Pokrovsky Monastery, Bussy-en-Othe, France) – Russian writer, publicist, Orthodox philosopher and representative of the conservative Christian movement in Russian literature. He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize (1931, 1932). The October events were dramatic for the couple because their only son was arrested and shot in 1921. Shmeliev went into exile in 1922 and settled in Paris in January 1923. He lived there for 27 years, never returning to his host country, but trying to maintain the old Russian way of life on the margins of French society.
