Diogenes II (#336)

Where are we going? What mysterious future observes this lonely explorer in his telescope, crossing immense depths of the sea?

This work is inspired by the first Russian submarine built in wood by a peasant, self-taught carpenter Efim Nikonov in 1721.

Today this submarine is exhibited at the open-air museum in Sestroretsk, a small town near Saint Petersburg, where the artist spent part of his childhood.

This painting pays tribute to the courage of all these explorers who dare to take a step toward their dream.
