Philosopher’s Steamboats

This exhibition commemorates the forced exile of intellectuals from the Soviet Union in 1922, the “philosophers’ steamers”.
In the complex history of Russian emigration, the episode of the “philosophers’ steamboats” in 1922 was a turning point, marking the determination of the new Russian power to harden the tone towards intellectuals, a step in the process of setting Russia on the road to a Soviet society.
A whole generation of intellectuals, university professors, scientists, philosophers and writers, accused of being enemies of the new regime, were ordered to leave the country on two ships from Germany. For them, an exile begins that many already think is definitive. It began with a stay in Berlin before these emigrants dispersed throughout the world (France, Czechoslovakia, England, the United States, etc.).
This exhibition of paintings, drawings and collages invites the viewer to discover and pay homage to these intellectuals who are in their field great names in Russian philosophy, linguistics, history and science.
