Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Olga Kataeva-Rochford is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker living and working in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olga Kataeva-Rochford is a professional painter, graphic artist and art teacher, a member of the Taylor Foundation (Paris), Art Critics Association (AIS). She is PhD graduate in cinema and audiovisual arts (2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was in charge of research for the exhibition “The Ecstatic Eye. Sergei Eisenstein, filmmaker at the crossroads of the arts” (Centre Pompidou-Metz, France) and teaches drawing at the \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure d’Architecture Paris – La Villette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her works appeared in prizes, publications, exhibitions and collections across Russia, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Great Britain, Germany and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She fell in love with art after discovering the expressive power of colour throughout summers spent with her Grandma in Gatchina, poring over art books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She followed her professional training in art in Saint Petersburg, where the Russian Museum, the Hermitage and the Academy of Fine Arts made her discover the work of the masters. This training was achieved by theoretical research on the drawing medium as part of a doctorate in Paris, the city where she currently lives, at the crossroads of cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, she composes works primarily inspired by travel, weaving influences from the Russian landscapes she grew up in as well as artists such as Petrov-Vodkin and Chagall to create a dreamlike world ready for the viewer to dive into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether she paints dreamlike subjects or seascapes, the main theme remains freedom, the dream of flight, crossings and the exploration of world cultures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Artist Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hi, my name is Olga Kataeva-Rochford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a painter and graphic artist. Born in Saint-Petersburg, I live and work in Paris. Passioned by the sea and ships, I teach drawing from life to future naval architects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of my French family is closely linked to the sea, so the main theme of my artistic work is exploration and journeys, both in spatial, temporal and cultural terms. The seamen, by their example, teach me inner freedom, mutual assistance, love of life, responsibility and discipline. The sea for me is associated with the human dream of conquering immense space. A ship is like a floating construction, a floating temple, a particle of human creative presence, in contrast to the immensity of the elements. The sea is as immense and deep as our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For every theme, I search for the means of expression and technique most suited to it. So my work is always very different, just like life itself. Life is our main gift, fragile and fleeting. All the manifestations of our lives are precious and worthy of being captured. This is what I talk about in my art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am attracted by complex and multi-layered textures and meanings. Images that reveal themselves to the viewer gradually, as they sink their gaze into the work. I often use tempera in my work. The harmony of its natural pigments reminds me of the monumental paintings of the Renaissance and Medieval masters. I also experiment with mixed media and wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything we create is the result of a long and complex process, and the viewer sees only a small part of it. Journeys, personal experiences and stories, encounters by chance and meetings with significant people in my life are all embodied in my artworks in one way or another. And the greatest joy is to see my emotions and impressions echoed in the viewer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
