About mezzotint
The mezzotint is one of the oldest engraving techniques. It was developed in the middle of the 17th century.
The image is created without the use of chemical processes (e.g. etching). Instead, the plate is completely roughened with a special knife and the image is then scraped off again with a polishing knife. While the cold needle method produces an image that goes from light to dark, making a mezzotint is the opposite process that goes from dark to light. The mezzotint method creates a soft image like no other printing technique.
The mezzotint achieves a tone by roughening a metal plate with thousands of tiny dots made by a small-toothed metal tool, called a “rocker”. In the case of printing, the tiny indentations in the plate hold the ink when the face of the plate is wiped. The image itself is then created by polishing the plate where the image is supposed to appear. The plate is printed in white where it is polished.
The mezzo-tint printing method was invented in Germany, and the first mezzo-tint print was made in 1642.
